Syrian film director Nidal al-Debs was born in 1960. After studying architecture at Damascus University, he studied filmmaking at Moscow Film Institute (VGIK), during which he directed two short features "Winter Sonata" and "Kolaj". His short feature debut "Ya Leil, Ya Ein!" (2000) won the Silver Prize at the Damascus International Film Festival and the Debut Award at Tunisia International Short Film Festival and two Prizes of Recognition at Montpellier International Film Festival, France, and also participated at Clermont Ferrand Festival as well as other European and Arab film festivals. "Ya Leil, Ya Ein!" was also shown on France's Canal+. Nidal al-Debs' first full-length "Under the Ceiling" (2005) garnered several awards, including: Special July Award, Sala Film Festival, Morocco, 2006. Bronze Prize at Muscat International Film Festival (2006). Best Actress Award, the Arabic Film Festival in Wahran, Algeria (2007). "Under the Ceiling" was also screened at different Arab and international film festivals, including: Competition of Debut Films, Montreal Film Festival (2005). Syrian Film Section, USA (2006). The film was also screened in Cairo, Dubai, Delhi, Cleveland, Singapore, Rotterdam and Paris. In 2006, Nidal al-Debs made a documentary video titled "Black Stone" which won the recognition of the Jury at Ismailiyya International Film Festival and participated in the Verité Film Festival, Paris (2006) and the Leeds International Film Festival (2006).
